“Taking up the opportunity to study abroad at Carleton University was one of the best decisions I have made at University. I had an incredible experience in Ottawa as I loved the lifestyle and Canadian people truly do live up to their stereotype of being friendly! Studying in a new country allows you to immerse yourself in a completely new culture and exciting surroundings, and also gives you the opportunity to learn more about your subject in a different perspective…the year abroad also gives you a chance to be a part of an international community, and it’s a great way to meet people from across the globe.
I was [also] part of the Costa Rica field course. Costa Rica is the perfect destination for a bioscience field trip! It makes for such a great destination because it possesses the highest density of biodiversity worldwide, allowing us to be completely immersed in wildlife and providing students with opportunities to learn about an array of flora and fauna in every unique location.
This trip was very educational in addition to being fun! Through guest speakers, we got to learn about issues which the tropics face and the difficulties of conservation which is very relevant to bioscience. It also gave every student first-hand experience with improving our identification skills, and surveying techniques. There was plenty of opportunities to learn about an array of species, through lectures and field work. We also had to conduct a group project whilst in the Cloud Forest, this gave us team-working skills and allowed us to actually conduct a scientific project whilst in the field.
I feel more confident in conducting field work amongst other scientists in the field. This is particularly helpful because I hope to go into more research in the future.”
