“I chose Exeter [because] I knew I’d be taught by lecturers who are specialists in their field and are conducting their own research which I found really interesting. I was also drawn to the breadth of modules I could take on my course. The selection to choose from is really wide and they’re all so interesting; the modules choices on offer were a lot more than other universities so that was the main appeal for me really.
I think for me the course is my favourite part of university as I think it is amazing and I don’t think I could study it at any other place.
In first year you gain a real breadth of knowledge; we learnt the basics of philosophy and after this year really get to narrow it down into your interests. We are given so many optional modules to choose from which means to can tailor the course to what you find interesting. I love that I get to learn about super interesting modern philosophy, and I’ve discovered that I really like Japanese philosophy which I studied this year. I never thought I’d enjoy this kind of philosophy and never thought I’d also enjoy my course this much after four years of studying it.
Our lecturers are incredible and are super passionate about the subject; they really try and make you interested in it too, and it doesn’t feel like they are just teaching but are trying to engage you in the content personally. I love how the lecturers show us how the content affects our life personally rather than just teaching something from a book. Everything we are taught also feels very current which is what I really like about my course.
All the lecturers are really helpful too, and I feel like I have a real personal relationship with them. I know that I can email a question and they’ll reply same day or I can pop into their office to ask question about something I don’t understand. It’s really nice and know the support is there; it’s a close tight knit group on our course, and I feel I can talk to the lecturers whenever I want.
I’m hoping to do a Masters in Journalism and am applying to this. I realised…that I’d like to work in TV and journalism. It feels like my degree and year abroad have paved the way for something for me that is different and I’ve been able to find what I’m interested in. My degree is good to go on to do lots of things as it teaches you critical thinking and lots of other transferable skills.”
