“I’m a half British, half Indian 21-year-old from a rather unremarkable town in the East of England, called Bedford. I studied English Literature, Geography and Biology at A-Level, then took a gap year to do some travelling in Central America. I actually then went to Cardiff University and started a degree in Biology. However, after the first year I knew it wasn’t right, and decided to see what my other options were.
Neither of my parents went to university, but I knew from a young age that I wanted to go. I have always loved learning, and knew I wanted to pursue a degree…Additionally, Exeter is one of the only Universities that offers a degree combining Politics and Geography. I thought this combination sounded perfect for me, as it would allow me to pursue my interest in both geography and politics and, crucially, take an interdisciplinary approach to my studies!…And, of course, Exeter is a very prestigious university with a great reputation, so that was another bonus!
One of my main concerns before starting at Exeter was the fact that I had never studied politics before. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep up in lectures, and that my course mates would working at a much higher level than me! I wasn’t even sure I’d like the subject! But a year and a half into my degree, I am absolutely loving it! It was definitely an adjustment at the start, transferring from a science degree to humanities…However, I came to see this as an opportunity learn from my peers, and now I feel completely confident in my abilities as a Politics student.
I absolutely love my course! I often find myself thinking how thankful I am that I chose it! As I said, being able to study a combined degree with access to both geography and politics modules is great! The modules on offer are so interesting, and my course is very flexible, allowing me to choose the majority of my modules. I also have the opportunity to take modules form other disciplines, or even learn a foreign language! I really like the fact that I have been able to choose modules from a range of areas of geography and politics, as it has allowed me to find out what I’m truly interested in. Additionally, finding solutions to many of the current global challenges we are facing requires an interdisciplinary approach, which I feel that this course is equipping me for. For example, I’m learning about both the science and the politics behind climate change! One thing I really value about my course is the small class sizes for seminars. I find that this makes sessions very interactive, and discussions are especially engaging and inclusive.
