“Studying Computer Science at Exeter has been an excellent experience. Although I did not have much of a computer science background before university, the course is very well structured. It provides both a broad overview of different areas in computing and the opportunity to explore in greater depth the topics that interest you most.
All first-year modules are compulsory, which helped me build a strong foundation in core computer science concepts. In the second year, there is a greater emphasis on group projects, which is particularly helpful for developing the teamwork and communication skills needed for a career in tech. In the third year, the focus shifts towards more independent work and research, especially through the dissertation, which offers a valuable opportunity to investigate a topic in depth.
The teaching and learning resources are also strong. Most modules combine lectures with lab sessions, and the lab facilities are modern and well equipped. I especially value the cultural diversity of the lecturers, as they bring a range of perspectives to their teaching and are open to feedback to improve the modules. Interaction between students and staff is well supported. Many modules provide online discussion forums, and all lecturers offer bookable office hours where you can ask questions or explore topics further. Some lab sessions are also supported by PhD students, who are consistently helpful and knowledgeable.”
